Vivek Ramaswamy is on TikTok now, thanks to Jake Paul.
Ramaswamy has gained about 33,000 followers in the week since he joined the platform, received support from one of the most divisive creators in YouTube history, and made an effort to position himself as the millennial politician who is hip enough to use tiktok recharge but anti-woke enough to appeal to the right. He has furthermore taken the brunt of Gen Z’s constant criticism of the edging to his videos.
In his inauguration video, the Republican nominee for president declared, “I care about the issues that affect not just millennials, but Gen Z and all young people in this country.” “The politicians in our generation are woefully out of touch.”
Ramaswamy’s TikTok activity contrasts sharply with his prior views on social media and young voters. Days before opening his account, Ramaswamy called tiktok recharge “digital fentanyl” from China during a town hall in Iowa. He has also famously advocated denying voting rights to everyone under the age of 25 unless they are in the military or pass a civics test.
Ramaswamy was persuaded to sign up for the app by Paul, a YouTuber turned boxer who has been involved in a number of incidents since being fired from Disney Channel’s “Bizaardvark” in 2017. Ramaswamy acknowledged in a tweet that despite privacy issues, the Republican party can’t connect with young people without stepping outside of their “echo chambers.”
@jakepaul
Getting Vivek on Tik Tok because i believe our politicians of the future should connect with gen z and milennials on social where we all live and breathe. Its bizarre that in this day and age our presidents have no connection with us via social. Only the occasional tweets. Meet @Vivek Ramaswamy
Last weekend, Paul gave Ramaswamy his support in a lackluster TikTok recharge video that included the candidate and influencer bobbing their heads in an apparent attempt to match the music.
Ramaswamy encouraged viewers of subsequent tiktok recharge videos to “keep the comments flowing,” which sparked a new round of edge jokes. Since then, he hasn’t posted.
