Google Fiber has launched its 5Gbps internet plan, which provides symmetrical download and upload rates. The service is currently available in four cities, including Kansas City, West Des Moines, and Fiber’s Utah cities.
The package costs $125 per month and includes an upgraded 10 Gig Fiber Jack, professional installation, a WiFi 6 router, and up to two mesh network extenders. While 5Gbps speeds may be excessive for most households, they can be useful for creative professionals, gamers, or anyone who requires minimal latency or transfers large files regularly.
The upgraded speeds demonstrate Google Fiber’s renewed focus on the industry, as well as its commitment to offering disruptive and innovative services that encourage competitors to upgrade their speeds and lower prices. Comcast already provides a 6Gbps service in some areas, but it costs $300 and lacks symmetrical uploads.
Google Fiber also announced that its 8Gbps service, which will also have symmetrical upload and download rates, is still in the works and will be available soon.
